Leo's Lightbulbsđź’ˇ- Stargate, Executive Order 14110 and Operator

The big news this week is Trump’s repeal of Executive Order 14110, titled "Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence," which was signed by Biden in 2023. This is part of a predictable pattern of hands-off, limited legislation about AI with the new administration. Overall I think this is a good thing for the USA, since people will be doing AI research in other countries without limitations. However, it does increase the risk of things going wrong. Is it the right decision? Ultimately, I think any AI legislation is just delaying the inevitable - whatever that inevitable outcome turns out to be, skynet or otherwise. Time will tell!

Trump also announced an investment vehicle Stargate, which would be a partnership between OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle. Elon Musk criticized the arrangement, and Elon and Sam Altman immediately began trading barbs on social media about it. Whoopsie!

People are very excited about the emerging Chinese models Deepseek and Qwq. I think it’s great if they can achieve what they have achieved with minimal compute resources. For those who aren’t caught up, these two models were supposedly trained with 1/10 the resources of OpenAI’s model, and cost 1/100 as much to use.

Finally, OpenAI launched their computer-controlling update to ChatGPT dubbed Operator, to compete with Google’s Mariner and Claude’s Computer Control. These updates allow AI to control your computer based on prompting. So cool!
