Leo's Lightbulbs💡- Deepseek roils the US stock market AND gets hacked

The big news this week is Deepseek and to a lesser extent Qwq. Though it’s really last week’s news, they burst into the limelight when they knocked 17% off NVIDIA’s stock price last Monday. Do they live up to the hype? Only time will tell.
I think there are two good points to make here. Point 1, they copied what OpenAI already did (proof-of-possible) thus allowing them to be much more efficient. Point 2, they used OpenAI’s o1 pro to train their model, allowing even more efficiency.
Also, there are significant concerns about security and censorship with Deepseek. I would advise people only to use it for fun and for testing and NOT for anything personal or sensitive. Stick with a US or EU based AI for daily use. Even if you download their open source model and run it locally, you have no idea what kind of backdoors and spyware may be embedded in it.
Long story short, I wouldn’t use I think the stock drop was unwarranted, there will always be needs for powerful GPUs for AI, I don’t trust Deepseek or any Chinese company with my data, and yet I’m excited to see two new competitors crowding the market and hopefully stimulating further innovation and growth! Competition benefits consumers greatly.
Oh, and apparently OpenAI users are 85% male. Ladies and other non-males, step it up, please! AI is for everyone, and it’s important for the world to have diversity in both AI users and AI developers. Don’t be scared, get in there!
